The annual St Stephens Day blitz on the outdoor court at Scoil Mhuire took place in almost ideal conditions....dry but with a gusting breeze to test the best of shooters. First played in the late 1960's, the Blitz has been a annual event ever since on the outdoor court at the local National School. Its a great time to meet up with former teamates and old friends who are home for the Christmas break. You dont have to ba a basketball player to take part and down through the years the Blitz has been well supported by sportsmen from all the various codes in the parish.. The competition is roboust and the more technical rules of basketball are sparingly applied. You can even get into the Blitz 'Hall of Fame' if you have enough wins

Moycullen 64 Kilester 58

A performance of true grit by the home side saw them beat Killester for the first time in the Superleague. Killester came into the game as red hot favourites as Moycullen were without their American Luke Enos who is recovering from an ankle injury. But Moycullen played with great pace and confidence and hit every important shot down the stretch while holding a star studded Kllester team led by American Jermaine Turner to a season low 58 points. All the Moycullen players stepped up big with Eoghan Maxwell having his best game this season and Cian Nihill was at his best in scoring a game high 18 points. Salva Camp and Mike Dowsd dominated the guard exchanges and Salva hit an impressive 16 points. Paul O'Brien had a great game, defending Turner while still chipping in 14 points at the other end. The big home crowd enjoyed a great contest and a super home win.

Irish Team Selection

Congrats to Darragh Mulkerrins and Mark Rohan who have been selected on the Irish U'16 team. The selection was made after a two day camp during the Christmas holidays which was attended by fifty invited players who had been previously selected at try-outs in November. Two other Moycullen players, Sean Candon and Padraig Doran were part of that selection.

The Superleague team came up with a great win at home on Sunday, defeating UL Eagles 63-61. The win is a great boost to the team as the had a very flat performance the day before against Belfast Star when the lost 75-61. In the UL Eagles game, Moycullen found the energy to overturn an eleven point first half deficit with a sparkling third quarter performance. With 90 seconds left in the game Moycullen led by nine but a late run of scores by UL put the game back in the balance. Slava Camps was the hero at the end, making a layup in traffic to secure the third win of the season for Moycullen.
Luke Enos had another big game, leading all scorers with 26 points. But it was the team effort in defence that carried the day for Moycullen including a series of brilliant stops at crucial times.

On Saturday the Moycullen U'20 advanced to the semi final of the National Cup with a great 64-60 win over Neptune. Paddy Lyons and Dylan Costelloe did the business down the stretch with a series of great plays at both ends of the court...... ReportU

18-November
Girls U14 Cup Quarter Final
Moycullen 22 Corrib 30

The Moycullen girls came up against a more determined Corrib side who had lost the last three straight against them in Oughterard on Monday night. The game was delayed for over an hour due to a referee mix up which helped neither side. The first quarter ended all square with Moycullen surrendering a three point lead in the latter stages. The second was a very competitive affair with neither team scoring until the last twenty seconds when Moycullen failed twice from the line, conceded the rebound and two points on a fast break – also conceding a foul which Corrib duly dispatched. Moycullen failed to score a point in the third ending up eleven points in arrears. Corrib held that big lead well into the 4th before Moycullen came alive to put a better gloss on the final score.
In summary, the key statistics were Corrib scored 14 from the line and had only one player fouled out while Moycullen missed several lay-ups, scored 4 from the line, had three fouled out with another two on 4. These two will meet again in Killannin in 2012

13 Nov
SuperLeague
Moycullen 65 UCD Marian 84.

Following on from their historic win over Neptune the week before, Moycullen failed to match the intensity of the visiting UCD Marian side in an entertaining encounter in Galway. While the teams were rarely seperated by more than single digits, Marian were deserving of their eventual win, controlling the match from the first quarter when they took a two point end of quarter lead that they never relinquished.

The game remained tight but Moycullen could never put toghether a sustained run to take the lead and despite a quality second quarter they were left four down at the half. However, Marian stemmed an early Moycullen onslaught in the third and scored the last two baskets of the quarter, giving them a nine point lead that provided enough of a cushion in the last to see them eventually ease out to a 19 point win.

Moycullen will rue their inability to get into any sustained offensive flow which led to too many turnovers and easy baskets for a focused Marian side intent on grabbing a win on the road. "We need to be the team that out hustles other teams and we base everything from that," said Moycullen forward Stephen Tummon. "We just never got going and while we obviously have to look at how we played, you have to credit Marian, they wanted the win and in fairness they played better. On the day they seemed to be first to all the breaks and never let us get into a sustained rhythm. We kept on waiting for that run to come for us and then when we were five down, it came for them instead at the end of the third, leaving us chasing the game to finish out."

Moycullen got their league campaign off to a winning start This win was a great team performance with all 14 players having their part to play in the match. The game had a great finish where they took the lead for the first time in the last minute of the game and held on to a well deserved win. A special mention to Mollie Finn who had a super game , leading scorer in the game with 9 points including the winning basket. SuperLeague Home Win....
Moycullen had a great 74-71 win on their home court over Neptune. The game had a dramatic ending when Moycullen clawed back a ten point deficit in the final quarter to tie the score at 71-71 . Then with six seconds remaining, Dylan Cunningham banked a three pointer left to win the game for Moycullen. It was no more than Moycullen deserved after two narrow losses in the previous home games. Today Luke Enos and Cian Nihill were on fire offensively, combining for 52 points and with Steven Tummon, Paul O'Brien and Eoghan Maxwell having super defensive games, Moycullen were able to limit a potentially free scoring Neptune attack. Point guard Michael Dowd had the pace and control to run the game effectively throughout for Moycullen and lead his team to their second win in a s many weeks Overall a most enjoyable and exciting contest for the . the big home support.....Photographs

23 October
Under 14 Girls league Moycullen 29 : Corrib 26

Moycullen started the U14 league where they left off last Easter when they beat Corrib by 3 points. This was a real war of attrition as both sides had three players fouled out and were in foul trouble early in both halves. Had either side been more accurate from the line, this result could have been very different. Indeed it was only in the last five minutes when Moycullen nailed five free throws that they pulled away from a very competitive Corrib side.

The teams meet again in the cup on November 14th in Oughterard and again in the league after Christmas so they will be well used of each other’s style by season end. Moycullen started slowly unable to find their range with their shooting and Corrib held a 7-3, 1st quarter lead. Over the next two quarters, Moycullen competed better and turned the game around turning the four point deficit into a three point lead. Megan O’Donnell marked her return to league action taking the scoring honours with 12 points but ultimately this was a team effort with eight of the ten getting on the scoresheet.

Squad: Áine McDonagh 3, Ailbhe Davoren 1, Amy Cooke 2, Catherine Connaire 6, Chloe Conroy 1, Kate O’Brien 2, Louise Hosty, Megan O’Donnell 12, Mollie Finn 2, Sorcha White.

22nd October
Superleague Result. Round 4
Moycullen 65 UCD Marian 67
Bitter diasppointment for the home team as they lost a thirteen point lead down the stretch having domnated the game from the start. Moycullen had played great but were forced into changing their lineup when American Luke Enos went to the bench with foul trouble deep into the third quarter.     UCD stepped up their perimeter defence and with their 6-8 centre protecting the lane, the Moycullen offence stalled. While Moycullen struggled to find a basket, UCD hit a hot streak and made some great baskets against a very good home defence Moycullen still held the lead into the final minute but UCD had the momentum and took the lead with a three point score with 15 seconds left. Moycullen did have a final shot which was blocked and UCD came away with a a win they never looked like getting until the very end.

Moycullen have been in with a chance of winning three of their first four games. They can take a lot of positives from their ability to compete at this level. The next step is to turn agood performances into a win Their next chance in NUIG will be iagainst Neptune on 5th November

15th October
Superleague Result. Round 3

Moycullen came within seconds of their first win when they led by two with nine seconds left. With Moycullen defending strongly, DCU missed the shot to tie the game but won the offensive rebound and scored. However the outcome of the game was decided as referee called an intentional foul as DCU scored the rebounded shot. This gave DCU possession and they scored on the buzzer for a win.
Despite that call that ended the home teams chances, Moycullen will be kickuing themselves after letting an eleven point lead evaporate deep into the final quarter .
Six turnovers in quick succession and a return of one point from eleven trips down court in the the final minutes opened the door for the DCU comeback.

Cian Nihill hits a three on the buzzer at the end of the third quarter to edge Moycullen into the lead.

The large crowd at the game will have enjoyed the excellent contest. Moycullen will take a lot of positives from their performance. All the players looked comfortable playing at this level despite being undersized compred to the DCU front line.. They led for most of the game and with a bit more composure down the stretch would have beaten a very good DCU team.
Cian Nihill 17, Stephen Tummon 14, Dylan Cunningham 12, Luke Enos 11

Next game is on Saturday v UCD Marian

2nd October
Opening round of the Super League

Moycullen opened their Super League season with an away game at UCC Demons, losing 83-60 to the Cork team. Moycullen competed well but three early fouls on American Luke Enos restricted his effectiveness At half time Demons led 43-36 but Moycullen were still well in the game. However Moycullen came out flat in the third quarter and Demons piled on the scores to jump out to twenty point lead. Moycullen created good scoring opportunities throughout and when Luke Rnos settles in to the team they s will be very competitve.

Paul O'Brien was top scorer with 16 points, Dylan Cunningham had 14 and Luke Enos scored 12.

Next weekend Moyculln play in Dublin and a week later they have their first home game on Saturday 15th October against DCU Saints.

12 September

Moycullen had two teams in action at the weekend. On Saturday the U'18 boys reached the semi final of the Cork County Board pre season tournament where they lost to Kubs by 4. Fine performance by the team considering some of them are still U16 and most are U17. Dylan Costello had an outstanding tournament but had to sit out the semi final as a precaution due to a sore knee.

On Sunday the U16 boys played in the Limerick tournament, reaching the semi final where they were beaten by Fr. Matthews of Cork. Darragh Mulkerrins and Sean Candon played great, showing the experience they have gained playing up a grade all last last season

Moycullen captain Patrick Lyons accepting the All Ireland U'16 Community Games trophy
Moycullen came away from the National Community Games Finals with gold and silver medals, the boys capturing the U'16 title for the first time and theU'13 girls taking the silver medals for the second year in a row.
The boys were always ahead in a hard fight final against the Munster champions from Kerry. They led by eight at the half but the Kerry team fought back and closed the gap to three points with two minutes to go. Moycullen showed great composure in the final minute to close out the game and win by four points. One of the key factors in the Moycullen win was their ability to come up with offensive rebounds, including four vital ones in the closing minutes. Their defense was also excellent, holding the two key Kerry players to a combined 14 points. and with all five Moycullen starters connecting with three pointers, they had the firepower when needed.

The girls came within a whisker of taking the gold medals, missing out by three points after overtime in a thrilling U'13 All ireland Final. They led by as much as eight points deep into the second half but ran into foul trouble which probably cost them the game. Inspirational players Aine mcDonagh and Ailbhe Davoren fouled out and although the game could still have gone either way in overtime, Moycullen just could not find the extra baskets needed to win the game.
Although bitterly disappointed not to win the final, they can be very proud of their All Ireland silver medals . And who will ever forget their unbelievable semi final win the day before, coming from what looked like a certain loss to the win that game by the narrowest of margins.

Thanks to everyone who helped prepare the teams and all who traveled to Athlone over the weekend to support. Thanks also to everyone who came out for the homecoming and the celebrations in the Forge on Sunday night.

Moycullen U13 Boys were in France in Juned for the Henri Seux International Tournament. This is a FIBA recognised tournament and includes teams from some of Europes top clubs including Real Madrid from Spain and Kaunas of Lithuania and many other other countries with great basketball traditions including Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Poland. There were also a number of French regional teams includng Pas de Calais and Indre et Loire.

Despite facing such strong competition, Moycullen came away with two wins from their six games and could easily have won two more, losing by four to Kravavec from Slovenia and by five to the Roumanian team Targu Mures. Fine performance all round and no doubt a lot learned.
