In the second last game of the regular season, the fans
in the National Arena in Dublin were treated to a triple overtime thriller
with Moycullen grabbing a draamatic win in the third period of extra time.
Moycullen played their best basketball of the season, hitting a regulation
time high of 91 points with Puff Summers, Cian Nihill and Garnett Griffin
scoring freely throughout the game. Hoops led by ten at one stage but
brilliant team defence hauled Moycullen back into the game and Garnett
Griffin tied the contest with two free throws at the end of regulation.
Moycullen had to come from behind again in the first overtime, Puff Summers
hitting a last second jumper to send the game into a second overtime.
Hoops again took the lead with 6-9'' American centre dominant in the paint
but Puff was now on fire and he again tied the contest with a super score
at the end of the second ovetime. The third period was all Moycullen ,
their fitness, scoring touch and team defence finally cracking the Hoops
resistance for a brilliant seven point win. Puff Summers hit an amazing
series of scores on his way to a 49 point total with Cian adding 26 and
Garnett 22. But it was the overall team spirit and effort in which eleven
players saw court time that hauled them to tremendous win.
Final game of the season on Sunday in Cork v Neptune . The team will be
looking tomake it three wins in a row to finish the season on a high.
The
men's Superleague team rose to the occasion in their final home
game of the season, producing a magnificent team display to beat
an inform Ulster Elks by six points in NUIG. Puff Summers ignited
the big home support with a blistering 22 first half points, Elks
having no matchup for his quickness and scoring touch., Moycullen
set the pace from the start and at one stage had built a sixteen
point advantage, the backcourt pace of Dowd, Loughnane and Summers
creating all sorts of problems for Elks. Garnett Griffin had his
best game of the season, matching up very well with the Elks american.
Garnett's power dunk at the end of a fast break was one of the highlights
of his confident performance. Cian Nihill closed down Irish senior
International Ian O'Boyle and added 21 points in an impressive display,
including two clutch baskets in the final minute to seal the win.
Veterans John and Nollaig Cunningham, sharing forty minutes court
time between them showed all the experience gained over long careers
with two big performances.. John hit four invaluable points in the
last quarter and Nollaig grabbed some great boards, including an
offensive rebound in the last play of the game.
The game was sponsored by by former Moycullen senior players, many
of whom were present to cheer on the new generation.
At half time National Community games medals were presented to the
