U12 Boys 'The Sparks'
23rd January 2012
Under 12 Boys - Galway League
Claregalway 18 : 34 Moycullen Sparks
Mike Dowd's Moycullen Sparks had another impressive victory
this week beating Claregalway in an away fixture by 34 to 18. Competing
against a bigger team, the skills of the Sparks combined with dogged determination
from every member of the team proved too much for the Claregalway boys.
At the end of the first quarter the Sparks were leading 10 to 2. A combination
of good team work and ball skills contributing to the lead. In the second
quarter the home team showed that they were not going to make it easy
for the visitors resulting in an end-to-end period with many 50:50 balls.
This left the score at half time of 15 - 6. In the third quarter Moycullen
pulled further ahead with some excellent combinations and great defensive
work by all the team. In the final quarter the Sparks hustled well and
kept the attacking Claregalway boys at bay with some great defensive work
closing out the game with a very impressive 16 point win over their older
rivals.
There are still lessons to be learned from this game and
Mike will not let his young charges rest on their laurels. With two more
games to go before the "play-offs" including a tantalising Moycullen Sparks
vs Hawks derby, it's still very much all to play for ....and these lads
are determined to go all the way. Well done Sparks!

18th December 2011
U'12 Boys - Galway League Moycullen Sparks 28 - Bearna 21
The Boys U'11 team (aka "The Sparks"), who are competing in the Juvenile
U'12 league, had a great win over Bearna on Sunday 18th December. This
puts the Sparks in a strong position at the half way stage of the league.
From the tip-off Bearna were first on the scoreboard but the Sparks then
produced 12 unanswered points giving the home team a 10 point lead going
into the second quarter.
The second quarter was more evenly matched with Bearna picking off 4 points.
In the third quarter the Moycullen boys drew further ahead with a 6 points
to nil tally. The fourth quarter proved a tough one for the home team
with Bearna making a strong comeback, outscoring Moycullen by 15 points
to 5. But in the end, the huge lead from the first three quarters was
too big for the visitors to overcome and the Sparks were victorious. Throughout
the game the home team stringed together some good passes and marked well
against a physically bigger Bearna team.
The Sparks coach, Mike Dowd noted however that the team has some work
to do in terms of passing the ball around to all of the players. The players
will also need to concentrate on moving off the ball into positions where
they can receive passes but these are skills that they can work on in
the new year. For the moment the Sparks can enjoy their Christmas break
and no doubt will come back in tip-top form for the rest of the season.
Well done
